Chickens arrive at Toadrow Farm!

Collecting Chickens

Welcoming new arrivals to Toadrow Farm

We collected our four lovely rescue chickens from a farm near Woodbridge this May.  They are from the amazing British Hen Welfare Trust who rehome over 60,000 hens each year, typically from battery farms.   Our lovely ladies are called Peepa, Bramble, Rainbow and Blackberry.

Raising chickens has become increasingly popular in Suffolk, and it's easy to see why. Not only do these delightful birds provide a sustainable source of fresh eggs, but they also bring a touch of rustic charm to any garden. Fresh, free-range eggs are a game-changer in the kitchen, especially when it comes to baking. Their rich yolks and superior flavour make them an essential ingredient for any baker looking to elevate their creations.

The quality of eggs you use can significantly impact the texture, flavour, and appearance of your cakes. Fresh eggs from happy, well-fed chickens have vibrant yolks and a rich taste that cannot be matched by store-bought varieties. These eggs add a natural golden hue and a depth of flavour that enhances your bakes, making them truly special.

Raising chickens and using their fresh eggs is not only rewarding but also allows you to create bakes that are richer, fluffier, and more flavourful. Plus, you have the added benefit of knowing exactly where your eggs come from and how the chickens are cared for. It’s a wonderful way to embrace sustainability and enjoy the freshest ingredients possible.

So, whether you’re a seasoned baker or just starting, consider adding a few chickens to your garden. Their eggs will transform your cakes, and their presence will bring joy and character to your home. Happy baking!
